Multiversidade (Multiversity) is a community of self-directed adult learners in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

-

Our start was in 2016, after a four-month pilot project called Desaprender (Unlearn). In 2017, we're opening our first call to establish a group of 15-25 learners with diverse backgrounds and interests.

We're a democratic university. Our mail goal is to help people rediscover themselves through their passion for learning. Each student is free to choose whatever topics he or she may be interested in studying and how they're going to learn it. As our main focus is on cooperation rather than competition, many collaborations might occur between learners and even the creation of communities of practice around common fields of interest.

How we do

We support learners through a structure based on biweekly meetings (pulses) and bimonthly cycles with an open sharing day at the end of each cycle. Also we offer retreats, self-directed learning course and counseling, mentorships, an open badge system and vision quests, as well as other activities focused on the areas in which students want to deep their knowledge. Learners can attend as many cycles as they want, and at the end of each semester (three cycles) we have a vision quest for them to decide if they're going to stay for another semester or not. A vision quest can be a 2-day hiking on the woods, a camp, an open exploration of the city or any other meaningful and challenging experiences the group of learners might want to have together.

We want to stimulate learners not only to design their own paths, but also to create and host learning activities outside of the biweekly meetings. Our staff helps students do this.

At the sharing days, we also have our general meetings in which we decide together the future of the project. All members of the community (learners, staff and mentors) are invited to join and the main decision-making procedure is consensus.

Our learning model

We designed our learning understanding by mixing two of our main theoretical inspirations: Alternative University's four-phase learning model (Exploration - Action - Transition - Mastery) and Yaacov Hecht's pluralistic learning concept. Thus, our approach is also composed of four stages (Exploration > Design > Inquiry > Delivery), each one representing either knowing or not-knowing areas, as described in the pluralistic learning model.
